THE ORIGINS OF OUR BADGE AND OUR 'TOLLERS' NICKNAME
Woodville was at one time - and not so many years ago - known as 'Wooden Box' and even 'Box' named after the wooden toll booth on the toll road from Ashby de la Zouch to Burton-upon-Trent. The toll booth was replaced by a brick building around the turn of the century, and that too has now gone. The area around the roundabout, which is the modern equivalent of the toll booth, is still known as 'Tollgate'. This is at the junction of five roads - the A511 Ashby de la Zouch to Burton-upon-Trent road (formerly known as the A50), the A514 Swadlincote to Derby road, and the road to Moira.
Early in 2007 several of us got together to research this and hopefully come up with a photograph of the wooden toll house. Several of us spent many an hour surfing the net and it was not until Paul Dancer contacted a local historian group in Swadlincote called 'The Magic Attic' who informed us that to the best of their knowledge there was no such photograph in existance.
A new angle was needed for our badge design so several alternatives were explored including drawings of a 'century' style box and even the Woodville coat of arms.
Then out of the blue Paul came across a photograph which showed the brick built Toll House at the corner of Moira Rd in Woodville. This photo is shown above.
As you will see we had very little to work with so Paul Dancer kindly offered to take the photo to his Grandfather, George Robson who in turn was able to draw the house from the old photograph.
Paul then contacted C.J Lewis printers in Ashby-de-la-Zouch who were able to put the drawing into a badge format.
The results were brillant and the committee decided to go ahead and get the badge produced. TAG Sports were presented with the draft badge and contacted their embroider to make sure that the badge could in fact be done.
A short while later the Soccer School where presented with a kit displaying the new badge. This can be seen on the Soccer School page on this site.
Then on October 6th 2007 the Under 10's team became the first to play a competetive game sporting the badge. Again this can be seen on the U10's page on this site.
We think that you will all agree that the finished badge looks tremendous!!!
Thanks has to go to Paul Dancer and his Grandfather, Mr Robson for making this happen.
